Na festivalu Brutal Assault jsem si popovídal se zásadními švédskými hudebníky Niclasem Engelinem a Peterem Iwersem, kteří přijeli koncertovat s kapelou The Halo Effect. Bavili jsme se zejména o vzniku této superkapely a o slavné metalové scéně kolem města Göteborg, odkud všichni pochází. Řeč byla krátce i o jejich hudebních vlivech, včetně Ozzyho Osbourna a také mi prozradili zajímavé plány do budoucna.

Hudební knihovna: Čau. Díky moc, že jste si udělali čas na rozhovor před vaším koncertem. Vítejte zpět v České republice a na festivalu Brutal Assault. S The Halo Effect jste tu poprvé, ale myslím, že jste tu oba už byli s In Flames, někdy před 10 lety? (v roce 2013, pozn. red.)

Niclas Engelin (kytara): „Jo, něco takového."

Peter Iwers (basa): „Rozhodně."

Pamatujete si něco z koncertu tady v pevnosti?

Niclas: „Rozhodně. Pamatuji si, že to byla skvělá show."

Peter: „Jo, byla."

Niclas: „Fantastické přijetí a moc jsme se bavili. Takže je opravdu fajn být zpět s The Halo Effect."

Opravte mě, pokud se mýlím, ale The Halo Effect měl být původně jen vedlejší projekt, ve kterém jste chtěli hrát společně, ale pak se z toho velmi rychle vyvinula regulérní kapela. Je to tak?

Niclas: „Ne tak docela. Myslím, že to měla být kapela od samého začátku."

Peter: „Jo."

Niclas: „Ale je nutné dodat, že Mikael (Stanne, zpěvák, pozn. red.) má Dark Tranquility a teď má i další kapely. Takže si myslím, že upřednostňuje Dark Tranquility. Nicméně, The Halo Effect je regulérní kapela a tak to mělo být. Ale trvalo to nějakou dobu, protože jsme začínali během pandemie a nemohli jsme vydat žádné novinky, když jsme nemohli koncertovat."

Poměrně rychle se dostáváte do povědomí. Máte dvě alba s relativně krátkou pauzou mezi nimi. Druhá deska „March of the Unheard" vyšla v lednu loňského roku. Co byste řekli k hudebním pokroku od „Days of the Lost" ( První album The Halo Effect z roku 2022, pozn. red.)? Je zřejmé, že jste už napsali spoustu hudby s velmi podobným zvukem. Umožňuje vám The Halo Effect dělat něco, co jiné kapely ne?

Niclas: „Myslím, že jsme do toho prostě šli. Moc jsme o tom nepřemýšleli (úsměv). Tohle je hudba, kterou chceme hrát, a přišlo to přirozeně. Když jsme začínali, protože jsme nahráli jen pár písní, nevěděli jsme, co máme hrát. Věděli jsme jen, že chceme něco začít. Chtěli jsme hrát společně a pak jsme začali s „Gateways", „Shadowminds" a „Feel What I Believe". To byly tři písně, které jsme nahráli jako demo. To tak nějak vydláždilo cestu hudbě pro první album a pak jsme prostě pokračovali stejným směrem."

Myslím, že všech pět z vás pochází z oblasti kolem Göteborgu a slyšel jsem, že chcete oživit nebo vrátit slavný göteborgský heavy metalový zvuk. Z Göteborgu je spousta kapel, jako například Avatar, Evergrey, At The Gates, Hammerfall a mnoho dalších. Proč si myslíte, že je Göteborg rodištěm tolika skvělých kapel?

Niclas: „V první řadě nechceme nic oživovat. Děláme jen hudbu, která se nám líbí. Na začátku jsme ani nevěděli, jaký druh hudby vznikne. Prostě jsme skládali, ale myslím, že důvod, proč je z Göteborgu tolik kapel, je protože tam, kde jsme všichni vyrůstali, jsme měli spoustu mládežnických center, kde jsme se mohli scházet. Mohli jsme si zdarma půjčovat zkušebny a vybavení a prostě se od sebe navzájem učit, hrát spolu koncerty a pomáhat si."

Peter: „Ano, opravdu zdravé a podpůrné prostředí."

Protože to není tak velké město, že ne?

Peter: „Ne, je docela malé."

Ale příležitostí pro mladé hudebníky je mnohem víc než kdekoli jinde...

Niclas: „Dřív bylo. Teď už to tak dobré není, protože nám vzali spoustu těch mládežnických center. Takže teď si lidé musí, myslím, platit za zkušebny. Ale my jsme to měli, jmenovalo se to Study Circus. Čím víc zkoušíte, tím víc hodin získáte, a čím víc hodin máte, tím víc peněz máte na nákup strun a podobných věcí. Myslím, že to tak už není."

Peter: „Myslím, že ne. Bylo to skvělé prostředí, fantastické prostředí."

Zjevně se to vyplatilo. Máte pocit, že hudební scéna tam upadá, nebo je prostě jen jiná?

Petr: „Myslím, že je to docela špatné."

Niclas: „Určitě existuje nová scéna, ale nemyslím si, že je tak velká jako když jsme začínali my. Kolem Göteborgu probíhala soutěž. Jmenovala se Rockslaget (V překladu „Rocková kapela". Později přejmenovaná na Göteborgstalangen, v překladu „Göteborgský talent", pozn. red.). Cestujete po mládežnických centrech a vidíte koncerty kamarádů a všech ostatních. A to bylo opravdu, opravdu skvělé. Ale to už neexistuje."

Peter: „Ale jsou tu nové kapely."

Niclas: „Jo. Mladí kluci, některým z nejmladších je teprve 18 let."

Jaký je to pro vás pocit vidět novou generaci, která nastupuje po vás a všech ostatních kapelách?

Niclas: „Jste z toho šťastní. Je to velmi nadějné. Budoucnost je s těmito mladými kluky zabezpečená."

Peter: „Jo, radost. Máte široký úsměv, když je vidíte, protože vidíte, kde jsou, a vzpomínáte si, jaké to bylo, když jste tam byli vy."

Myslíte si, že tito mladí muzikanti vás vidí jako své idoly a hrdiny?

Niclas: „Někteří, určitě. Ale jsou schopní začít sami. Můžou dělat to, co chtějí, a jsou velmi, velmi dobří. Většina z nich."

Jo, nemyslel jsem tím, že potřebují, abyste jim prošlapali cestu nebo aby vás kopírovali. Jsem si jistý, že vás, Mikaela a další kolegy mají jako inspiraci. Stejně jako jste tehdy měli inspiraci vy, že?

Peter: „Samozřejmě, jo."

Niclas: „Jo, víš co…. Všechny staré kapely jako Iron Maiden a všechny ty další skvělé kapely, ale i spousta nových kapel, tě můžou inspirovat. Teď už nejsou tak noví, ale kapely jako Killswitch Engage, když se u nás objevili, asi před 15, 20 lety. Úžasná kapela. Vím, že je inspiruje celá göteborgská scéna, ale také dělají své věci, které inspirují nás. O tom ta hudba je, dává a bere."

Posloucháte hodně jiné hudby, když máte čas? Jiný žánr, když pracujete na své muzice?

Niclas: „Zrovna včera jsme si zajamovali v autobuse, což bylo prostě úžasné." (smích)

Peter: „Bylo to velmi pohodové."

Niclas: „Jo, soul, r’n’b, zpívali jsme si spolu..."

Peter: „Prostě jsme začali malý jam a všichni si přidali svou písničku. Bylo to moc hezké, ale bylo už hodně pozdě." (smích)

Je dobré být otevřený, nenechat se zaslepit vlastním žánrem a poslouchat i jiné věci…

Peter: „Přesně tak, jo."

Když už mluvíme o inspiraci, jsem si jistý, že jste slyšeli o Ozzy Osbornovi a jeho posledním koncertě v červenci. Bohužel nedávno zemřel. Je asi fér říct, že i Ozzy a Black Sabbath vás ovlivnili jako hudebníky a celou göteborgskou scénu, protože on byl ten, kdo v podstatě celou věc začal?

Niclas: „Jo, naprosto, byl úžasný. V mládí jsem vždycky poslouchal zejména Ozzyho Osbourna. Byla to rozhodně obrovská inspirace. Jak jsi říkal, neposloucháme jen death metal, posloucháme všechno a všechno může být inspirací pro cokoliv, co děláme."

Peter: „Jako třeba „Gateways". Mělo to být něco úplně jiného. Původní riff tam pořád je, ale písnička se dost změnila."

Přemýšleli jste o tom, že po jeho smrti uděláte nějakou coververzi Ozzyho Osbournea nebo Black Sabbath jako poctu?

Peter: „Bylo by to krásné, ale nemluvili jsme o tom."

Protože na jeho posledním koncertě pozvané kapely zahrály covery několika písní a bylo zajímavé slyšet Slayer, Lamb of God nebo Metallicu hrát tyto písně...

Peter: „A tenhle chlápek Yungblud fantasticky odzpíval píseň „Changes"..."

Jo. Říká se, že je další v pořadí po Ozzym, protože je mu velmi podobný.

Peter: „Ano, to je pravda."

Takže, máte teď nové album a také nový cover singl „How The Gods Kill". Neustále tedy tvoříte. Jaké máte plány na zbytek roku a na příští rok s The Halo Effect? Už plánujete natočit nové album, nebo se zaměříte spíše na turné?

Peter: „Natočíme nové album. Mluvili jsme o nahrávání koncem tohoto roku. Niclas tvoří spoustu písní. Určitě je to na cestě. Ale není na to žádný spěch. Samozřejmě to bude chtít nějaký čas, ale takový je plán."

Niclas: „Předtím máme nějaké coververze, které vydáme koncem tohoto roku."

Peter: „Například coververzi „Dancing with the Devil"."

Niclas: „Myslím, že příští týden jeden cover vychází (Skladba „If You Were Here" od švédské kapely Kent. Původně nahrána jako „Om du var här", pozn. red). Takže budeme dělat tohle a další vyjde příští rok."

A to bude pořád s Nuclear Blast?

Peter: „Jo. Myslím, že jsme s nimi už mnoho, mnoho let. Máme s nimi opravdu skvělý vztah a Jens (Jens Prueter, vedoucí umělců a repertoáru Nuclear Blast Europe, pozn. red.), který je náš člověk, dříve pracoval pro Century Media, takže ho známe a je to velmi, velmi dobrý vztah."

Rozumím, takže není důvod cokoli měnit.

Peter: „Ne, vůbec ne."

Niclas: „Není to rozbité." (úsměv)

Niclas: „Děkujeme."

Od rozhovoru vydali The Halo Effect v listopadu 2025 cover EP „We Are Shadows" a 27. února 2026 vyšel nový singl „Lest We Fall", na kterém spolupracovali i Heaven Shall Burn a The Black Dahlia Murder. Ve stejný den se s Heaven Shall Burn a The Black Dahlia Murder vydali na další evropské turné k desce „March Of The Unheard". Na tomto turné se zastaví 15. března i v Brně v klubu Sono.

At the Brutal Assault festival, I spoke with the essential Swedish musicians Niclas Engelin and Peter Iwers, who came to perform with the band The Halo Effect. We mainly talked about the formation of this super-band and the famous metal scene around the city of Göteborg, where they all come from. We also briefly talked about their musical influences, including Ozzy Osbourne, and they also revealed some interesting plans for the future.

Hudební Knihovna: Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to me before the show. Welcome back to the Czech Republic and to Brutal Assault. It’s the first time for The Halo Effect, but I believe you were both here with In Flames before, maybe 10 years ago? (N.B.: In 2013)

Niclas Engelin (guitar): „Yeah, something like that."

Peter Iwers (bass): „Absolutely."

Do you remember anything from the concert in this fortress?

Niclas: „Absolutely. I remember it was a great show."

Peter: „Yeah, it was."

Niclas: „Fantastic reception, and we had a lot of fun. So, it's really nice to be back with The Halo Effect."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but The Halo Effect was originally just a side project for you to play together, but then it evolved to a regular band very quickly. Is that correct?

Niclas: „Not really. I think it was supposed to be a band from the very beginning."

Peter: „Yeah."

Niclas: „But I mean, Mikael (N.B.: Stanne, vocalist) has Dark Tranquility, and now he has other bands as well. So, I think he prioritizes Dark Tranquillity. But The Halo Effect is a regular band, and it was meant to be like that. But it took some time because we started during the pandemic, and we couldn't really release any news because we couldn't tour."

You're getting quite big very quickly. You have two albums with a relatively short gap between them. „March of the Unheard" was released in January last year. What would you say is the musical progress from „Days of the Lost" (N.B.: The first The Halo Effect album from 2022)? Obviously, you created a lot of music already with a very similar sound. Is there something that The Halo Effect is allowing you to do that other bands didn't?

Niclas: „I think we just went for it. We didn't think about it too much (smile). This is the music we want to play, and it came naturally. When we started, because we just did a couple of songs, we didn't know what we were supposed to play. We just knew we wanted to start something. We wanted to play together, and then we started with „Gateways", „Shadowminds", and „Feel What I Believe". Those were the three songs we recorded as a demo. That kind of paved the way for the music for the first album, and then we just kept going in the same direction."

I believe all five of you are from the Göteborg area, and what I heard is that you want to kind of revive or bring back the Göteborg heavy metal sound. There are plenty of bands from the Gothenburg area, like Avatar, Evergrey, At The Gates, Hammerfall, and many others. Why do you think Göteborg is the birthplace of so many great bands?

Niclas: „First of all, we don't really want to revive anything. We just make the music we like. In the beginning, we didn't even know what kind of music was gonna come out. We just wrote, but I think the reason why there are so many bands from Göteborg is that where we all grew up, we had a lot of youth centers where we could hang out. We could borrow rehearsal spaces and equipment for free, and just you know, learn from each other, play shows together, and help each other out."

Peter: „Yeah, really healthy and supportive environment."

Because it's not such a big city, is it?

Peter: „No, it's kind of small."

But the opportunities for young musicians are much better than anywhere else...

Niclas: „They used to be. Now it's not so good anymore because they took away a lot of those youth centers. So, now people have to, I guess, pay for rehearsal space. But we had it, it's called Study Circus. The more you rehearse, the more hours you gain, and the more hours you have, the more money you get to buy strings and stuff like that. I don't think it's still there anymore."

Peter: „No, I don't think so. It was a great setup, fantastic setup."

I mean, it paid off apparently. Do you feel like the music scene there is in decline, or is it just different?

Peter: „I think it's pretty bad."

Niclas: „There is definitely a new scene, but I don't think it is as big as when we were starting. There was a competition they had around Göteborg. It's called Rockslaget (N.B.: „The Rock Band", later renamed to Göteborgstalangen, „Göteborg Talent"). Where you travel around these youth centers and see all the shows of your friends and everybody. And that was really, really cool. But that's not around anymore."

Peter: „But there are new bands."

Niclas: „Yeah. Young kids, some of the youngest ones are just 18."

How does it feel for you to see the new generation after you and all the other bands?

Niclas: „You're happy for it. It's very hopeful. The future is safe with these young kids."

Peter: „Yeah, happiness. You have a big smile just seeing them, because you see where they are and remember how it was when you were there."

Do you think the 18-year-olds see you as their idols and heroes?

Niclas: „Sometimes, absolutely. But they can start on their own. They can do their own thing, and they are super, super good, most of them, yeah."

Yeah, I didn't mean that they needed you to pave the way or to copy you. I'm sure they have you, Mikael, and other guys as their inspirations. Same as you had some inspirations back in the day, right?

Peter: „Of course, yeah."

Niclas: „Yeah, you know. All the old bands like Iron Maiden and all those great bands, but also a lot of new bands, can inspire you. Now they are not so new, but bands like Killswitch Engage, when they came around, like 15, 20 years ago. Amazing band. I know that they are inspired by the whole Göteborg scene, but they also do their own stuff to inspire us. It's music. It's a give and take."

Do you listen to a lot of other music when you are on your own? Different music when you are working on your own stuff?

Niclas: „We just had a session in the bus, which was just awesome." (laughter)

Peter: „It was very mellow."

Niclas: „Yeah, soul, r’n’b, we had a sing-along..."

Peter: „Just start a little jam, and everybody was having a song. It was very nice, but it was very late." (laughter)

It is good to be open-minded as well, not to be blinded by your own genre, and take other things as well.

Peter: „Exactly, yeah."

Speaking of inspiration, I'm sure you heard about Ozzy Osbourne and his last concert in July. Sadly, he passed away recently. Is it fair to say that even Ozzy and Black Sabbath influenced you as musicians, and the whole Göteborg scene, as he was the person who basically started the whole thing?

Niclas: „Yeah, absolutely, he was amazing. I always listened to Ozzy Osbourne, in particular, in my youth. It was definitely a huge inspiration. Like you said before, it's not like we listen to only death metal, we listen to everything, and everything can be an inspiration for whatever we do."

Peter: „Like „Gateways" was supposed to be something completely different. The original riff is still there, but the song changed."

Have you thought of doing a cover of Ozzy Osbourne or Black Sabbath as a tribute to him after he passed away?

Peter: „It would be beautiful, but we haven't spoken about it."

Because at the concert, the bands that were invited did a cover of few songs, and it was interesting to hear Slayer, Lamb of God, or Metallica play these songs...

Peter: „And this dude Yungblud did a fantastic take on the song „Changes"..."

Yeah, they say he's the next in line after Ozzy, as he is very similar.

Peter: „Yes, true."

So you have a new album, and you also have a new cover single, „How The Gods Kill", so you are continuously making music. What are the plans for the rest of the year and the next year for The Halo Effect? Are you already planning to make a new album, or will you focus on touring?

Peter: „We're gonna make a new album. We talked about recording later this year. Niclas is creating a bunch of songs. It's definitely on its way. There's no rush with it, though. It's gonna have to take its time, of course, but that's the plan."

Niclas: „Before that, we do have some cover songs that we are releasing later this year."

Peter: „A cover for „Dancing with the Devil", for example."

Niclas: „We'll have one next week, I think (N.B.: Song „If You Were Here" by Swedish band Kent. Originally recorded as „Om du var här"). So we will be doing that, and the next one will be out next year. "

And that will still be with Nuclear Blast?

Peter: „Yeah, I mean, we've been with them for many, many years. We have a really great relationship with them, and Jens (N.B.: Jens Prueter, Head of Artists and Repertoire for Nuclear Blast Europe), who is our guy, used to be with Century Media before, so we know him, and it's a very, very good relationship."

I see, so there is no reason to change anything.

Peter: „No, not really."

Niclas: „It’s not broken." (smile)

Since the interview took place, The Halo Effect released a cover EP „We Are Shadows" in November 2025 as well as a new single „Lest We Fall"„ on the 27th of February 2026 featuring Heaven Shall Burn and The Black Dahlia Murder.
