Nothing But Thieves: Dokud nás naše hudba baví i druhý den ráno, děláme svou práci správně
David Malý, 31. 08. 2026
Během festivalu Rock for People jsem si popovídal se zástupci britské kapely Nothing But Thieves.
Rozhovor nabízíme i v angličtině.
Interview available also in English down below.
Hudební Knihovna: Především vám moc děkuju, že jste si našli čas. Na festivalu Rock for People jste hráli před třemi lety, krátce před vydáním posledního alba „Dead Club City".
No, idioti.
Jo, to dává smysl.
Dominic: „Jo. Velmi, velmi pomalu. Je to neuvěřitelné. Technicky vzato jsme kapela od roku 2011 a první desku jsme vydali v roce 2015. A pořád nejsme headliner, takže…
Jeden z vašich největších hitů „Amsterdam" pojednává o fyzickém i psychickém vyčerpání z neustálého koloběhu turné, album, turné.

ENGLISH
During the Rock for People festival, I spoke with representatives of the British band Nothing But Thieves. Together we discussed the success of their latest album "Dead Club City", as well as their new single "Evolution" and the upcoming album "Stray Dogs". We also talked about the themes that the band deals with in their work, their approach to songwriting and their attempt not to follow trends. We also talked about the gradual growth of the band and the search for a balance between touring and personal life.
Hudební Knihovna: So, first of all, thank you very much for taking the time. You played here at the Rock for People festival three years ago, and that was just before the release of the last album "Dead Club City”. That album became number one on the UK album chart. Do you think that the risk you took by going further into pop and the synth influences paid off in the success?
Joe Langridge-Brown (guitar): "I think as long as you're believing in what you're putting out and its quality, then it's not really that much of a risk.”
Dominic Craik (guitar): "Yeah, I agree. I think for the outside world, it may have felt like a bigger shift than to us. It felt like the most exciting thing we could have produced at that time. So I think, like Joe said, it just felt like the right trajectory for us.”
So, it didn’t come too much as a surprise?
Dominic: "It did. I mean, having a number one record is obviously a great thing to get.”
Joe: "We've been going for 10 years at that point as well, right? So, maybe it's like slow growth that eventually got to the point where we could have a number one record.”
Last month you released a new single "Evolution”, which should be a single from the new upcoming album "Stray Dogs”. Does the success of "Dead Club City” put more pressure on you or is it rather a motivation?
Dominic: "When you talk about things like a number one record, it's really nice, but it's not something that's the driving pattern why we make these and all that. The crazy process of recording is not something we talk about really. So, this record, the whole idea is that we're trying to capture how we sound live on a record. I think we've never really done that before and that was kind of the most amazing factor. How do we do that? How do we go about that?”
The last record talks about the exclusivity in society and the feeling of hopelessness in the future. Do you consider it a warning or rather a prediction?
Dominic: "Well, the last one was a prediction. The whole idea was that it was like a record about a city sized members club, and if governments were kind of ruled by people, that would just well be, well, an ass. Which is essentially what's happening now.” (laughter)
James Price (drums): "It's kind of what it is, yeah.” (laughter)
Dominic: "So yeah, a prediction that is proving right. This new record isn't like that. Actually, this record is… We kind of left that behind. This record is very different.”
Different in the sense of which topics will explore?
Dominic: "Different topics, yeah. We would just get bored of writing that way. We like to do a sort of blend as well and this is not the only thing we want to talk about.”
Also many of your songs talk about anxiety and uncertainty. Do you think the writing of these songs came easier with the time, with age, or is it still mentally difficult to explore these topics?
Dominic: "Can be difficult, but this was the first record. We wrote this record very differently to the last record, because before they were mostly written on the road or in between tours and we had like a week, here or there, writing the record. This time we wrote for solid five months together in a studio and that was priceless.”
Musically, it feels like Nothing But Thieves were never really very interested in chasing trends rather than doing your music, your thing. How do you balance being successful and trying to stay true to who you are?
Joe: "I think you don't try to be successful (smile). I honestly think that's it. I think you need to focus on doing something that you believe in. It sounds really cliche but if you're walking away from the music that you just wrote and it's embarrassing you then you're in trouble. And as long as we listen to it the next morning with fresh ears and it's exciting, then we are doing our job. We just hope that everyone else likes it but honestly, we would never set out to write just for people. Some bands do that and that works for them and that's great but I think we write for ourselves and then if people like it, they like it.”
You cannot shoot for the stars, it needs to be taken step by step…
Joe: "Yeah. Also, If I was to spin it and look at my favorite artists, I wouldn't know what I want from them. I wouldn't know what I want them to do. Bowie, for example, gave people albums they didn't know they needed, or wanted. So, you have to put the power in the fans.”
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. You cannot really do something that you think the fans want you to do...
Joe: "You would never, no band would ever progress with that. If they did the same album every time.”
I think the band is growing quite a bit lately. Last time you were here three years ago, I kinda labeled you as the next headliner in Europe. You are just below the headliners today, but do feel like you're progressing towards that direction?
Dominic: "Yeah. Very, very slowly. It's been incredible. We've been a band technically since 2011 and we have put our first record out in 2015. And we are still not headlining, so...But it does feel like we're progressing and I think I'd rather end somewhere here, because we've learned a lot of things along the way, rather than just being dumped.”
One of your biggest hits "Amsterdam” talks about the sort of physical and mental exhaustion of doing the whole tour/album/tour cycles. So how do you cope with that and do you think a band can afford to slow down a little bit, like take a year off?
Dominic: "Yeah, I think so. You know, freedom comes when you get to a certain level. At the start we had to, or we felt that we had to say yes to everything. We were doing incredibly long tours. Back to back, we'd be home for a few days and then go back out. We'd be in the US for seven or eight weeks, sometimes. The European tours would be in a van for weeks on end. And that was great for the band at the time, but it's not necessarily sustainable. So, now we do less gigs, but they're bigger. We're very lucky to be able to do that. It's definitely a privileged position to be in. You don't feel like you have that kind of flexibility at the start of the day.”
Yeah, now you can maybe afford doing shorter runs? Maybe more often, but shorter runs.
Joe: "Yeah, we try to keep it to three weeks now. It's kind of a sweet spot. We used to do like eight weeks, so three weeks is fine.”
So, now you are about to release the new album, you have these European festivals for the rest of the summer and then tours by the end of the year. Is there anything that creatively excites you for the next year ? What are the plans for Nothing But Thieves?
Dominic: "We need to kind of design the production and stuff for our live shows next year. That's kind of where our heads are now. We're putting out the record, that's all done. It's recorded, it's on the way. I saw the prepared visual stuff and we’ll be trying to bring it to light live, I guess.”
Alright, perfect. Thank you very much for the talk and enjoy the show.
Dominic: "Thanks.”
Joe: "Thank you.”
