Před koncertem Zebrahead na festivalu Rock for People jsem si popovídal s baskytaristou Benem Osmundsonem a kytaristou Danem Palmerem.
Rozhovor nabízíme i v angličtině.
Interview available also in English down below.
Vítejte na Rock for People. Jste tu poprvé. Jak se vám líbí areál? Stihli jste si ho trochu projít?
Ben Osmundson (baskytara): „Jo, den volna jsme strávili tady."
Ben: „Jo, byli jsme tady. Promiň, jestli jsme byli na sračky a dělali kraviny (smích). Hrozně jsme si to užili.
Ben: „Bad Nerves, Kneecap, Trophy Eyes, Speed…
Máme to tady rádi."
Ben: „Máme to tady rádi.
Nudí vás to někdy?
Ben: „Ne. A my se prostě probudíme a jsme tam.
Ben: „To nás kurva vyděsilo."
Rok a půl bez hudby, bez festivalů.
Dan: „Budu pozitivní a prostě si to budu užívat, dokud to mám." (smích)
Loni jste vydali poslední EP z trilogie „III", „II" a „I". Bylo to odpočítávání k něčemu?
Ben: „Pořád se to snažíme rozhodnout (úsměv). Naše plánovací schopnosti nejsou nejlepší (smích). Teď píšeme spoustu skladeb a pořád ještě nevíme, co s nimi uděláme.
Ben: „Jo. Jo."
Titulní skladba posledního EP se jmenuje „I Have Mixed Drinks About Feelings", což je mimochodem skvělá slovní hříčka. Moc se mi líbí…
Ben: „Díky."
Jaký je váš oblíbený drink? Jste v České republice, tak opatrně. (úsměv)
Dan: „Ach jo (smích). Můj skutečně oblíbený drink je tequila s čímkoliv. Což není zrovna moc české."
Ne, to opravdu není…
Ben: „Řekl bych plzeň."
Dan: „No vidíš."
To je lepší. My tady míchané drinky zase tolik nepijeme…
Dan: „Jo, to vidím.
Takže to má alespoň tuhle výhodu."
Je na tom něco pozitivního, jo. Vaše hudba je samozřejmě směsí punku, rocku, trochu rapu a trochu heavy metalu. Když tedy tvoříte novou hudbu, máte nějakou představu, jak skladba nakonec dopadne, nebo prostě děláte to, na co máte zrovna chuť?
Ben: „U nás to většinou začíná tím, že Dan hraje nějaký kytarový riff, a pak se z toho pokaždé nějakou náhodou stane něco dalšího. Moc si nesedáme a neplánujeme. Prostě: ‚Do prdele, cos to právě zahrál? To je skvělé, udělejme kolem toho song.‘ Něco v tomhle stylu."
Dan: „Je to hodně brnkání a dělání kravin (smích). Někdy se to stane, když jedeme na zkoušku, kde píšeme. Prostě přijdu a řeknu: ‚Slyšel jsem v rádiu tuhle písničku. Má kurva skvělý beat, tak z něj pojďme využít rytmus a použít ho na nějakou naši skladbu.‘ Někdy zkoušíme něco takového. Obměňujeme věci a vytváříme něco zajímavého."
Dobře. Takže je to pro vás velmi přirozené. Nemáte žádnou šablonu nebo nějaký postup?
Ben: „Jo, to ne. Je to fajn. Vím, že takhle funguje spousta kapel, ale u nás do toho opravdu každý něco přidá a dává to smysl, takže každý má pocit, že je toho součástí, víš?"
Před pár lety jste do kapely přivítali Adriana (Adrian Estrella, zpěv a kytara, pozn. autor) poté, co odešel Matty (dlouholetý kytarista a zpěvák Matty Lewis, pozn. autor).
Ben: „Jo.
Dan: „Děláme to s každým nástrojem, jo."
Ben: „Jo. Nezáleží na tom."
Dan: „Já třeba hraju na kytaru a on řekne: ‚Hele, změň tam tenhle malý tón.‘ Všichni jsme součástí tvůrčího procesu, díky čemuž je to perfektní zkušenost. Ale někdy je to taky: ‚Kurva, fakt? Chceš, abych změnil tuhle malou část? Dobře.‘ A pak ji změním."
Když jsme znovu nahrávali „The Early Years" s Mattym, bylo v tom hodně různých emocí. A… myslím, že živé album by si lidé užili víc."
Dan: „Jo. Upřímně, jsem velký fanoušek Suicidal Tendencies. Miluju jejich první desku a oni ji znovu nahráli. A je to takové… Meh, chápeš?"
Ben: „Není to stejné."
Dan: „Jen to udělají uhlazenější."
Ben: „Na žádné z nich jsme nebyli.
Ben: „Jo."
Dan: „Takže pokud chcete na některém našem koncertě slyšet konkrétní skladbu, začněte ji hodně poslouchat." (smích)
Myslím, že na to už je pozdě, ne? Hrajete za pár hodin. (smích)
Dan: „Jo, ale my přijímáme požadavky ze Spotify." (smích)
No, kdybyste zahráli „Lobotomy For Dummies", bylo by to skvělé.
Na skladbě „Devil on My Shoulder" jste měli jako hosta Jeana-Kena Johnnyho z Man With a Mission.
Jo. Moc by to nesedělo.
A věříme v podporu nezávislých umělců."
No, přesně tohle by umělci měli dělat, ne?
Ben: „Ale uvědomujeme si, jaký význam AI má a co by mohla udělat spoustě lidí z umělecké branže.
I když to samozřejmě nebude stejné."
A vznikly v šedesátých letech.
Ben: „Měl jsem malý walkman a chodil jsem kolem bloku a poslouchal „Bark at the Moon". Hrál tam na kytaru Jake E. Lee?"
Dan: „Myslím, že jo."
Super, moc děkuji. Kromě dnešního koncertu na Rock for People hrajete ještě na spoustě dalších festivalů a později jedete, myslím, do Austrálie.
Ben: „Jo, přesně."
To je tedy nejbližší plán na letošní rok. Už jste zmínili novou hudbu. Co čeká Zebrahead v roce 2026?
Ben: „Ke konci roku 2026 uděláme velké evropské turné. Zaručuji ti, že Praha bude na seznamu." (úsměv)
Dan: „Jo, určitě."
Dobře, super. Budu se těšit. Moc děkuji za váš čas. Užijte si koncert a brzy na viděnou. Mějte se.
Dan: „Díky, kámo, uvidíme se."
Ben: „Díky."

English
Before Zebrahead’s show at Rock for People, I spoke with bassist Ben Osmundson and guitarist Dan Palmer. We talked about their relationship with the Czech Republic, their favourite festivals and how the band enjoys travelling around the world. We also discussed the "I”, "II” and "III” EP series, their plans for new music ahead of Zebrahead’s 30th anniversary and their approach to songwriting. Other topics included adapting their setlists based on Spotify streaming statistics, collaborations with other musicians and their views on the use of artificial intelligence in the creative industry. We also talked about the legacy of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath.
Hudební Knihovna: Thank you very much for talking to me. Welcome to Rock for People. It’s your first time here. How do you find the area? Did you manage to walk around a little bit?
Ben Osmundson (bass): "Yeah. We spent the day off here.”
Yeah, I thought I saw you yesterday, actually. (smile)
Ben: "Yeah, we were here. Sorry if we were trashed and doing stupid shit (laughter). We had too much fun. We got a little drunk.”
It’s good you could enjoy it here, since you were here early.
Dan Palmer (guitar): "Yeah. We were here all day. I went on the ferris wheel, went to the bar. Went to see some bands, went to the bar, you know.” (laughter)
Ben: "Bad Nerves, Kneecap, Trophy Eyes, Speed… We just made the rounds yesterday and decided to have a fun day.”
Dan: "Yeah, it was cool.”
Ben: "The layout of the festival is perfect. You can walk to any stage in a short amount of time.”
It's not too huge, that's true. You are probably used to slightly bigger festivals. You've played Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park, Slam Dunk…
Dan: "Yeah, but those are a pain in the ass.”
How so?
Dan: "Because those are too big. Even some of those festivals we'll be on are like: 'Whoa, is it another stage there? What's going on there?' You know, you don't even know what the hell is happening there.”
I understand what you mean. You’re also playing the Mighty Sounds festival again, also one of the mid-size ones. You've played in Prague many times as well, so you seem to be keen to come back to the Czech Republic, right?
Dan: "Fuck yeah. We love it here.”
Ben: "We love it here. We're big fans of the entire Czech Republic, but we love Prague. We're eternal tourists. We love to see the sites. We love to visit everywhere and every time act like it could be the last time you go somewhere because you have to. You have to enjoy all the stuff that we're so lucky to get to see, right?”
Dan: "Plus the shows here are so great. I mean, people come to shows here. They're so passionate and kind of fucking crazy. It's awesome.”
It's cool that you are still happy to do that because It's been a good while. Does it ever get boring?
Ben: "No. It's like you're getting to see stuff that people save their whole life to go on a trip. And we just wake up, and we're there. We're very lucky.”
Dan: "Like you said. It's good trying to treat it like what if it's the last time we ever come here. You know, with the whole pandemic thing and everything that happened.”
Ben: "It scared the shit out of us.”
Dan: "The whole world shut down. I was thinking, 'Fuck, that could've been the last time I ever went to these places.' So yeah, it's a newfound appreciation. I'm gonna get my ass up and go see the city. You know, I'm not gonna take this for granted.”
Yeah, I think it's a new boost for everyone. The year and a half without music, without festivals. People were very unhappy during that time…
Dan: "But it's in general. What if the band breaks up or whatever? What if I die tomorrow? I don't know, you know?”
Well, let's not go there. Let's keep it positive, shall we? (laughter)
Dan: "I'll be positive and will just appreciate it while I get it.” (laughter)
Last year, you released the last EP of the EP trilogy, "III”, "II”, and "I”. Was it a countdown to something?
Ben: "We're still trying to decide that (smile). Our planning skills aren't the best (laughter). Now, we're writing lots of songs, and we're still yet to decide what to do with it. Next year is the 30th year of the band, so we're gonna be putting out a lot of music next year. And so we're just trying to decide how to package it. But the songs are almost ready. We're gonna start recording when we get home in September.”
Dan: "Oh yeah.”
The EPs seem to be a celebration of the history of the band's 30 years. You know, looking back and remembering all the experiences and good times you've had. It's obviously party music, and you have a lot to remember, right?
Dan: "Oh yeah, it's insane.”
Ben: "Yeah. Yeah.”
The title track of the last EP, "I Have Mixed Drinks About Feelings", which is a brilliant pun, by the way. Love it...
Ben: "Thank you.”
What's your drink of choice? You're in the Czech Republic, mind you. (smile)
Dan: "Oh, my (laughter). Well, my true drink of choice is tequila with anything. Which is not very Czech.”
No, it's not…
Ben: "I'll say a Pilsner.”
Dan. "There you go.”
That's better. We don't do mixed drinks that much really…
Dan: "Yeah, I can see that. No matter, I'll drink anything.” (laughter)
With these three EPs and last full-length album in 2023, are you one of the bands that prefer to release a full-length studio album every three years or so, or rather release singles and EPs more often?
Ben: "I think these days, with people's attention span, people don't want albums anymore. I want albums. I like the whole album with artwork and everything. I like to hold it in my hands. But people these days with their attention span… Yeah, they just want singles on Spotify.”
Right. Yeah, they say that people don't listen to albums anymore. They like two or three songs, and they are done with it.
Dan: "Which, in a way, with every release of an EP, it'll make the songs last longer as far as taking people's ears and eyes. So, that's a good advantage of that, at least.”
There is something positive about it, yeah. Your music is obviously a mixture of punk, rock, a little bit of rap, a little bit of heavy metal. So, when you are making new music, do you have any idea how the song will turn out, or do you just make whatever you feel like?
Ben: "With us, it usually starts with Dan playing a guitar riff and then it just turns into something by accident every time. We don't really sit and plan out much. It's just 'Oh shit, what did you just play? It's rad, let's make a song around that.' Something along those lines.”
Dan: "A lot of noodling and fucking around (laughter). Sometimes it happens when we drive into meetings to write songs. I just come and say: 'I heard this song on the radio. It's got a cool fucking beat. Let's get the BPMs from it and use it for a song.' Sometimes we try something like that. We change things up and create something exciting.”
Okay. So, it's very natural to you. There's no template or a scheme?
Ben: "Yeah, no. It's cool. I know there are many bands like that, but truly, it's everyone's input, and it makes sense, so everybody feels a part of it, you know?”
A couple of years back you welcomed Adrian (N.B.: Adrian Estrella, vocalist and guitarist) into the band after Matty left (N.B.: Long-term guitarist and singer Matty Lewis). Did he already work on the 3EPs? How do you like his musical input towards the writing process and music making?
Ben: "Yeah. I mean, to be honest, it never really changed. It's been the same way where all of the five people kinda put something in there. Their input on the whole songs a lot of times. The band as a whole would be helping with melodies and lyrics. Not so much Ali's chords (N.B.: original lead vocalist Ali Tabatabaee), but the singing chords, you know? It's always kind of like: 'I can't get a melody idea'. Somebody else goes: 'I have a melody idea'. And it happened on tons of songs.”
Dan: "We did that with every different instrument, yeah.”
Ben: "Yeah. It doesn't matter.”
Dan: "I could be playing guitar, and he will be like: 'Hey man, change that little note right there'. We're all in the creative process, which makes it a perfect experience. But also sometimes it's like: 'Uh fuck, really? You want me to change that little fucking part? Alright.' And then I change it.” (smile)
Ben: "And it usually makes it better.” (laughter)
Dan: "It's great to have the other opinions and other voices in it to stay on the right track.”
Are you planning to re-record any music, any song or album with Adrian? Because you did that with Matty before, right?
Dan: "Are we gonna record the old songs with Adrian as we did with Matty?”
Ben: "I don't think so. I think if anything, we're gonna release a live album, actually. And that would be the closest we get to something like that again. It was a bit bittersweet. We re-recorded "The Early Years” with Matty, and it was kind of a mix of emotions. People want to remember the songs the way they originally were. And it's… I think a live album is what people would rather enjoy.”
Dan: "Yeah. If I could be honest, I've been a big fan of Suicidal Tendencies. I love their first record, and they re-recorded it. And it's like… Meh, you know?”
Ben: "It's not the same.”
I get it. You listen to an album so many times, you want to hear the same version that you are used to, right?
Dan: "If you already love it, you don't need it fucking better (laughter). It's not gonna get any better for you. You know what I mean?”
Ben: "Most people don't think it's better anyway.”
Dan: "They just make it slicker.” (laughter)
It's already been 16 years since the release of the covers album "Panty Raid”. I still cannot get the video for Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend” out of my head. It's brilliant. Are you planning to do anything like that again?
Ben: "I mean, if we listen to our drummer (N.B.: Ed Udhus), he wants to do that every day.”
Dan: "Yeah.”
Ben: ”We don't know. Maybe. Ed sure pushes for it. We will see.”
I'm not sure if you were ever on the Punk Goes Pop compilations…?
Ben: "We were not on any of those. We only did our own cover album.”
And do you think you have enough material for "Greatest Hits? - Volume 2?
Dan: "We shouldn't even have Volume 1, are you kidding me?” (laughter)
Ben: "Yeah. I mean, we will wait a little bit.”
Dan: "We have to make some hits first.”
Ben: "Yeah, we have to write our first hit soon.”
I mean, after 30 years of Zebrahead, it might be a good thing to do, don't you think?
It could be just your own selection of the best songs in your opinion. Not necessarily the ones that charted the highest, for example.
Ben: "Yeah. You know, it's easy for us to do. It's a lot of fun now. You just look at the streaming numbers. It'll show you the highest streaming songs in cities or countries. You can tailor a setlist or anything to what people actually really like. And that's kind of a cool thing.”
Do you follow these stats or is it just a fun fact for you?
Ben: "Yeah. We talk about it all the time. When we're doing a tour, we look at the stats for those areas. Saying, 'Okay, those are the songs that we play.' Like the top 20 most popular ones.”
Oh, interesting. So, you are tailoring the setlist based on where you play?
Ben: "Yeah.”
Dan: "So, if you want a specific song heard at one of our shows, start listening to it a lot.” (laughter)
I think it's too late for that, no? You're playing in like a few hours. (laughter)
Dan: "Yeah, but we take requests from Spotify.” (laughter)
I mean, if you can play "Lobotomy For Dummies”, that would be amazing.
Dan: "Let's check that stream, bro.” (laughing)
Ok, you check it later, and we will see (laughing)
Dan: "It's not at the top, no.”
You also had Jean-Ken Johnny from Man With a Mission as a guest on "Devil on My Shoulder.” You don't really do guests very often, do you?
Ben: "Yeah, it's tough. I don't know. We've had a few people reach out to us in the past. We tend to… We have two singers already, you know what I mean? It makes it weird. It would mean one of our singers wouldn't be in the song.”
Yeah. It doesn't fit very well.
Dan: "It's a lot of cooks in the kitchen.”
Ben: "Yeah, it's a lot of cooks. And it's not like we need some shredding guitar player to do something. But still, it is fun to do songs with your friends. So, if the opportunity comes up, we are definitely not opposed to it.”
I want to ask about the artwork in your booklets because regardless of the album, it always looks like a snapshot from a movie. Even the last three EPs, which are basically the same image in different colors. Are the booklets your ideas, or are you maybe using AI for inspiration?
Ben: "We're doing our best to support the artists and video people and not use AI. So, we're gonna try to keep the fight and not use AI as much as possible. The guy that designed our last three EPs and the "Brain Invaders” album lives in Germany. And we believe in supporting independent artists.”
Dan: "You know what, it's also about the human touch. It may not be as slick or look as good, but I think people can still tell the difference a little bit. I'd rather not have it fucking perfect but with a human touch to it.”
Ben: "I sure do enjoy AI videos, though. Like chimpanzees talking.” (laughter)
Dan: "Yeah, you do watch that shit.” (laughter)
Well, that's what artists should be doing, right? As well as musicians and all the creative people. It should be from their heads, and it should be their take on whatever is being made.
Ben: "But we realise the significance AI has and what it could do to a lot of artistic people. I just saw today that they are putting out a commercial that's fully done with AI. And I'm just like, 'Fuck, that's crazy!” It's gonna put so many people out of work.”
Dan: "My sister does sound for commercials, for example. What's she gonna do? You know? That's the thing. Things like that.”
I'm still hoping people would stand behind the real artists, but lately it's getting difficult to even recognise whether it is AI or a real person. It's becoming a problem, I think.
Dan: "Right? I mean, I got a couple of friends, and they're nearly falling in love with their AI assistant on their phone. Like, this guy said he's in love with his AI bot. He talks with it all the time.”
Ben: "I don't even know how to use it.”
Dan: "Me neither. I don't use it either, but it's absolutely insane.”
I have one last question. Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath are having their last show this summer, and they have this huge amount of guest stars. What do you think about this last epic show and the farewell of a person who practically invented heavy metal?
Ben: "I think it's one of the coolest concerts to ever be thrown. That lineup is the most incredible lineup I have ever seen.”
Dan: "I wish I could go.”
Ben: "I wish I could go too.”
Dan: "But I guess we'll watch it on TV. Even though that's not the same.”
Ben: "All those giant bands are all coming together to play that show… It's awesome.”
Dan: "And then the thing about Black Sabbath. You can like any kind of music, but you put on "Iron Man", and everybody in the fucking world knows "Iron Man.” You know what I mean? It's so iconic and heavy. It's like everybody's heavy metal band.”
Yeah. He's the one. You would recognize the voice everywhere.
Dan: "For sure. But for me it's always the guitar riffs, man. Those riffs are the shit. And they were done in the 60s. Which is insane to think about.”
Was Ozzy and Black Sabbath influential at all to you when you started playing music?
Dan: "Yeah, I think for me it's more Tony Iommi because of the guitar riffs and his style. But yeah, for sure. I mean, everybody who's playing guitar or bass was influenced by them.”
Ben: "The "Bark at the Moon” album was one of the first cassettes I bought.”
Dan: "Oh yeah. That record is awesome.”
Ben: "I had a little walkman and I would walk around the block listening to "Bark at the Moon". Was it Jake E. Lee playing the guitar on that one?”
Dan: "I think so, yeah.”
Cool, thank you very much. So, besides this show here at Rock for People, you are doing a lot of other festivals, and later, you are going to Australia, I believe.
Ben: "Yeah, exactly.”
That's the nearest plan for this year. You mentioned some new music already. What's on the menu for Zebrahead in 2026?
Ben: "Towards the end of 2026, we are gonna do a huge tour in Europe. I guarantee Prague will be on the list.” (smile)
Dan: "Yeah, for sure.”
Ok, cool. I will be looking forward to that. Thank you very much for your time. Enjoy your show and see you soon. Take care.
Dan: "Thanks, man, see you.”
Ben: "Thank you.”
